Ger J.M. Koper obtained his PhD (1990) in theoretical physics from the Leiden

University, with prof. dr. J.J. Hilhorst. He was subsequently appointed assistant

professor at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry and became associate professor in 1998.

In 2000 he was appointed associate professor at the TU Delft working in the field of

physical chemistry focusing on self-assembly processes.

He specializes in the application of statistical and irreversible thermodynamics to meso-

scopic phenomena such as (nano)particle deposition (2000), ligand binding to macro-

molecular systems (2003), drying of colloidal films (2007), stick-slip transition in

nanopores (2007), heterogeneous catalysis in nano-colloidal systems (2006), and self

assembly (2009).

He recently contributed to the development of nanomaterials for fuel cell applications

which brought two new developments: (1) a robust wet synthesis procedure to produce

catalyst particles at high yield and (2) the invention and further investigation of carbon

nanonetworks with superior performance as substrate for fuel cell catalyst. Both

inventions have been investigated from a fundamental level as well as a fully applied

level. The developed materials proved to have many other applications that are currently

marketed by a TU Delft spin-off company CarbonX.

He has (co-)authored over 150 scientific articles and has written two text books (2008).
