The currentcommercial photovoltaic (PV) technologies are still restricted from widespreadapplication in general household due to their higher cost per electricity wattcompared to traditional fossil fuels. Thus over the last two decades hugeefforts have been devoted to develop third generation PVs which have thefeature of low cost, high efficiency and low environmental impact. Theseinclude sensitized solar cells which employ light absorbing material based onorganic dye molecule or inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals or the recentlydeveloped perovskite material.    Besides light absorber, thenanostructure TiO2 film is another component which is crucial for highperformance sensitized solar cells. An in-depth understanding the kinetics ofcharge transport and recombination in the mesoporous TiO2 film can provide thekey information for the device, which will  in-turn guide materialscientists to develop suitable materials for high performance sensitized solarcells. In my talk, I will present my research in the area of sensitized solarcells in terms of new material design and development as well as thefundamental study of the electron recombination in the device. The challengesand opportunities in this area will be discussed.

Assoc. Prof. Hongxia Wang

Assoc. Prof. Hongxia Wang is  currently an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and Associate  Professor at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Before this, she held  the position of QUT Vice-Chancellor Senior Research Fellow (2010-2012) and  Research Officer at University of Bath, UK (2007-2010).

Dr. Wang received her PhD  in  Condence Matter Physics from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science  in 2005. After that, she worked in the industry (Dyesol, Ltd) for two years  before joining the university research environment.

Currently, her research group at QUT  is mainly focus on development of new routes for low cost solar cells - work  that includes new materials for solar cells including sensitized solar cells  and thin film solar cells using earth abundant materials. Assoc. Prof. Wang  has also devoted significantly to the study of the charge transfer and  recombination processes in mesoporous structure of TiO2 film for  dye-sensitized solar cells.

Dr.  Hongxia Wang has published  over 50 peer-reviewed research papers in high impact international journals.  She is also the inventor for three patents and one industrial product on  dye-sensitized solar cells.
